Under the Kassite Kings of Babylon, Mesopotamian culture flourished, but eventually a new power arose that threatened the ancient kingdom: Assyria. The Sargonid period (Eighth to Sixth Centuries BCE) saw the apex of the Assyrian empire until it, too, was brought low under the resurgent power of Nebuchadnezzar’s Babylon.
Iranian peoples conquered and ruled much of the Near East for a thousand years. The Achaemenid empire of Cyrus the Great, Darius, and Xerxes, was unparalleled in size or wealth, but later Persian empires of the Parthians and the Sassanians had to fight for territory with the Romans of the west.
Day 4:
- Free day or optional group activity
