2025 BSS in Egypt Course Itinerary
Friday 28 February to Friday 7 March
HATSHEPSUT AND SENENMUT: INNOVATION AND IDEOLOGY
Course Director: Dr Campbell Price (University of Manchester)
Day 1:
- Morning / early afternoon arrival to Luxor (participants are responsible for their own travel*)
- Transfer from airport and check into the Pavillon Winter Luxor Hotel for 7 nights.
Day 2:
- Lecture 1: The Exceptional Reign of Hatshepsut
- Site visit: Luxor Museum
- Group lunch at local restaurant
- Welcome Dinner at the hotel
Day 3:
- Site visit: West Bank Thebes – Hatshepsut Temple, and Senenmut tombs TT 71 and TT 353 [special openings].
- Group lunch at local restaurant
- Lecture 2: The Greatest of the Great: Senenmut’s career
- Lecture 3: Senenmut’s Two Tombs
Day 4:
- Site visit: Tombs of Djehuty TT11, Hery TT12, plus the neighboring Tombs of Roy, Shuroy, and Amenemopet, as well as Rekhmire TT100 and Ramose TT132.
- Site visit: Tomb of Djehuty-mes TT110, Tomb of Puyemre TT39, Tombs of Nefer Renpet TT43, and Nefer Sekheru TT107
- Group lunch at local restaurant
- Lecture 4: Speaking to the Future: Hatshepsut’s building programme
- Lecture 5: Hatshepsut: Honouring the gods and becoming divine
Day 5:
- Walk in Armant, Senenmut’s birthplace (no site visits; if allowed by Tourist Police)
- Site visit: Visit Karnak
- Group lunch at local restaurant
- Lecture 6: Hatshepsut’s Relationship with Senenmut
- Lecture 7: Hatshepsut’s Afterlife Expectations
Day 6:
- Site Visit: Deir el-Bahri MMA504 with famous erotic graffiti [special opening]
- Group lunch at local restaurant
- Lecture 8: Innovation and Ideology: The statuary of Senenmut
Day 7:
- Free day or join the optional extra hot air balloon ride and / or felucca ride
- Lecture 9: Death and Destruction: Why did Hatshepsut and Senenmut disappear?
- Lecture 10: Overcoming the Enemy: Legacies of Hatshepsut and Senenmut
- Farewell Dinner at the hotel
Day 8:
- Transfer to airport for return flights*
